Oradour-sur-Glane was a small but thriving village in the Limousin, Haute-Vienne on the river Glane about 22km northwest of Limoges. On June 10, 1944 the Waffen SS shot or burned to death 642 men, women and children. Everyone who was in the village, or happened to be passing through at the time. They then burned the village. Obviously it wasn't the only village to suffer such loss, but kept in this state as a memorial, by order of Charles de Gaulle—it is the only such village still standing. Oradour-sur-Glane was the worst massacre of civilians by Nazis on French soil. (There are a few captions here but not much more can be said, click pics to enlarge.)
Last image: rough translation of the sign on the church:
Quiet.
Here hundreds of women and children were massacred by the Nazis.
You who pass by—meditate (on this).
You who believe (in God)—say a prayer for the victims and their families.
In the town in ruins, standing alone outside remained the Cross of Christ. Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes. Come to me you that suffer says Christ. Do what he tells you says the Virgin.
Rest in peace.
They rest in peace. Because they are living in eternity.
